HIARCS Demo Companion folder
================= NOTICE ===========================
Applied Computer Concepts is not responsible for the
"HIARCS Demo Companion" folder.
This folder was created by a third party without
the knowledge or consent of Applied Computer Concepts
====================================================
The files in this folder were added by fowell@netcom.com
with the hope that they would make the
HIARCS Demo more useful/informative.
1) The HIARCS demo makes a good free reader for PGN and EPD files
available on the Internet, so here's where to find such files:
On AOL: go to keyword "chess", then look in the files section
On the Net: ftp://caissa.onenet.net/pub/chess
On the Web: http://www.redweb.com/chess/
I've included two PGN files I got from AOL.
"LINARES.PGN" - 91 games from the Linarea 1994
supergrandmaster tournament (Kasparov, Karpov, etc.)
"SHORTGM2.PGN" - 32 short games, many famous ones.
NOTE: the HIARCS PGN import reader is very strict:
it wants to see the 7 standard tags,
( Event, Site, Date, Round, White, Black and Result )
and in that order. If you're having trouble importing
a PGN file, open it in a text editor and compare the
game headers (square-bracketed text) format to that
in either of these files. If the headers are different,
edit them so they are in the same format.
2) My testing so far (problem tests) support the opinion of
Applied Computer Concepts that HIARCS Mac is the
strongest Mac chess program. Here are my test results;
Note that these "ratings" are estimates based solely on
these problem sets, and past results indicate a margin of
error of about +/- 100 points.
The CCR test is a set of 25 tactical/positional problems,
and was run
on a PowerMac 6100/66 using Speed Doubler 680X0 emulation s/w,
Listed in order of average "rating".
Mac Software Version "One-Hour" "One-Hour" "Maresch" "Average"

3) Since many features are disabled in the demo,
I thought more samples would help.
a) HIARCS analysis
I've included two sample files of saving a game
together with analysis. I only gave HIARCS 1min/move
for the analysis, so don't place too much weight
on the quality of the analysis - my intent is to show
the format.
gamelist.lst - listing file, most readable form.
prints/views best with monospace
font like Courier.
analysis.pgn - PGN output file, with HIARCS analysis.
b) EPD files
A file describing the EPD position notation is given,
with some sample files (.EPD files)
c) Some more description of HIARCS features.
The following newsgroup post describes the features.
Note that more distributors may have been added since this
post, so sending email to the HIARCS folks is still a good idea.
Besides, they may want feedback on how many
people downloaded their demo.
(*** The following post was edited to move the Mac info in
front of the PC info, but is otherwise unaltered ****** )
