  10. The files in this folder were added by fowell@netcom.com
  11.                 with the hope that they would make the
  12.                 HIARCS Demo more useful/informative.
  13.  
  14. 1)  The HIARCS demo makes a good free reader for PGN and EPD files
  15.      available on the Internet, so here's where to find such files:
  16.  
  17.      On AOL: go to  keyword "chess", then look in the files section
  18.      On the Net: ftp://caissa.onenet.net/pub/chess
  19.      On the Web: http://www.redweb.com/chess/
  20.  
  21.      I've included two PGN files I got from AOL.
  22.      "LINARES.PGN" - 91 games from the Linarea 1994
  23.               supergrandmaster tournament (Kasparov, Karpov, etc.)
  24.      "SHORTGM2.PGN" - 32 short games, many famous ones. 
  25.  
  26.      NOTE:  the HIARCS PGN import reader is very strict:
  27.         it wants to see the 7 standard tags,
  28.         ( Event, Site, Date, Round, White, Black and Result )
  29.         and in that order. If you're having trouble importing
  30.         a PGN file, open it in a text editor and compare the
  31.         game headers (square-bracketed text) format to that
  32.        in either of these files. If the headers are different,
  33.        edit them so they are in the same format.
  34.  
  35. 2) My testing so far (problem tests) support the opinion of
  36.     Applied Computer Concepts that HIARCS Mac is the
  37.     strongest Mac chess program. Here are my test results;
  38.  
  39.      Note that these "ratings" are estimates based solely on
  40.      these problem sets, and past results indicate a margin of
  41.      error of about +/- 100 points.
  42.  
  43. The CCR test is a set of 25 tactical/positional problems,
  44. and was run 
  45. on a PowerMac 6100/66 using Speed Doubler 680X0 emulation s/w,
  46.  
  47. Listed in order of average "rating".

  63. 3) Since many features are disabled in the demo,
  64.      I thought more samples would help.
  65.  
  66.      a) HIARCS analysis
  67.  
  68.      I've included two sample files of saving a game
  69.      together with analysis. I only gave HIARCS 1min/move
  70.      for the analysis, so don't place too much weight
  71.      on the quality of the analysis - my intent is to show
  72.      the format.
  73.          gamelist.lst - listing file, most readable form.
  74.                            prints/views best with monospace
  75.                            font like Courier.
  76.          analysis.pgn - PGN output file, with HIARCS analysis.

  78.      b) EPD files
  79.          A file describing the EPD position notation is given,
  80.          with some sample files (.EPD files)
  81.  
  82.     c) Some more description of HIARCS features.

  84.         The following newsgroup post describes the features.

  86.     Note that more distributors may have been added since this
  87.     post, so sending email to the HIARCS folks is still a good idea.
  88.     Besides, they may want feedback on how many
  89.     people downloaded their demo.

  142. HIARCS International is NOT copy protected.

  144. Chess Strength: Uses same chess engine as HIARCS 4.0.
  145.                 We believe HIARCS International is significantly stronger than
  146.                 any other MAC chess software especially at tournament time
  147.                 controls.

  150.    Almost all the features of the PC version mentioned below with the addition
  151.    of dragging pieces, use of MAC toolkit and dialogues etc.
